Reading the numbers
Every ring size in the world describes the same thing: the inside of the band. The three systems just describe it differently, which is why a conversion chart is the only safe way to move between them.
The European system is the most literal. An EU 54 is a band with an inside circumference of roughly 54 millimeters. That is the ISO standard, and it is why EU numbers in the conversion chart below look like they climb so fast compared to US numbers.
The US system counts in fixed steps instead. One full US size adds about 0.81 mm to the inside diameter, or about 2.55 mm of circumference. A half size adds roughly 0.4 mm of diameter. That is a smaller change than most people picture, and it explains why two sizes can feel nearly identical on a cold morning and noticeably different by dinner.
The UK system runs on letters, with half sizes marked by a fraction. Because the letters were never designed to map cleanly onto the US scale, some UK sizes land between two US sizes. If a UK size sits between two US options in the chart, treat it as an approximation and confirm the diameter in millimeters before ordering.
If you are ordering from overseas or working from a vintage ring with no markings, ignore the letters and numbers and work in millimeters. Inside diameter and inside circumference are universal. Give a jeweler either measurement and they can produce the correct size in any system, no conversion errors involved.

A better fit
Half a size sounds like nothing. On the finger it is the difference between a ring you forget you are wearing and one you take off at your desk.
A ring a quarter size too small will not hurt at nine in the morning. It will by four in the afternoon, and it leaves a groove that takes hours to fade.
A ring that spins turns its stone toward your palm, where the setting takes knocks it was never built to take. Loose rings also come off in gloves, in sinks, and in cold water without you noticing.
Sizing a plain band is routine. Certain metals and settings cannot be altered at all, and on those the measurement is the whole decision. See which ones.
At-home methods
Not every method is equally reliable. These are ordered from most accurate to least, and the last one comes with a warning.
This is what sits behind the counter at every jewelry store, and it works for one simple reason: you are wearing an actual ring, not measuring around your finger with something flexible. A gauge set lets you feel resistance at the knuckle, feel how the band settles at the base, and compare a size 6 against a 6.5 back to back.
Try several sizes. The correct one slides over the knuckle with a small amount of effort, sits without spinning freely, and takes a slight tug to come back off. If it falls off when you shake your hand down, it is too big. If you have to work at it or your skin bunches coming off, it is too small.
Steel gauge sets typically run US 0 through 13 in half sizes. They are the closest thing to a professional fitting you can do on your own couch.
The plastic strip with a buckle, usually marked US 1 to 17 in quarter-size increments. You thread the end through the buckle, slide it over the knuckle, and tighten until it is comfortable. An arrow points at your size.
Two things people get wrong with these. First, they pull too tight, because a snug reading feels satisfying. Second, they measure only the base of the finger and never test whether the reading actually clears the knuckle. Loosen the buckle until it comes off over the knuckle without a fight, then read it again. Take the larger of the two readings.
A multisizer usually lands within a quarter size of the truth, which is close enough for a plain band and worth confirming for anything that cannot be resized later.
Useful, with conditions. The borrowed ring has to be one she wears on the finger you are buying for, on the same hand. Most people's dominant hand runs a quarter to a half size larger than the other, so a ring from the right ring finger is not a substitute for the left.
Measure the inside diameter, not the outside. Lay the ring flat, hold a millimeter ruler across the opening at its widest point, and read inner edge to inner edge. Then find that diameter in the conversion chart above. A steel gauge set does this better: slide the borrowed ring onto a mandrel, let it come to rest, and read the size off the scale.
Bring the ring in if you can. Ten seconds on a mandrel beats any amount of careful ruler work.
This is the method that produces the most incorrect orders, and it is worth being blunt about why. String stretches. Paper compresses and creases. Neither one behaves like metal, so the number you get describes the material more than it describes your finger. A strip pulled snug can read a full size smaller than the ring you would actually be able to wear.
It also skips the knuckle entirely. Wrap a string around the base of your finger and you will get a base measurement that may not pass over the joint at all.
If it is the only option you have, use a strip of paper about a quarter inch wide, wrap it around the widest part of the knuckle rather than the base, mark where it overlaps, measure the length in millimeters, and treat the result as a rough starting point to confirm later. Do not order a ring that cannot be resized off a paper measurement.
Printable circle charts and paper ring sizers are only as accurate as your printer settings. Most print dialogs default to a scaling option that shrinks the page slightly, which is enough to throw the result off by a full size.
Set the printer to 100 percent or "actual size," never "fit to page." Then check the printout against something with a fixed dimension. A standard credit card measures 85.6 mm wide. If the printed reference does not match, the chart is not usable.
Tools worth owning
Two inexpensive tools that give you a real measurement instead of an estimate. Neither replaces a professional fitting for a ring that cannot be resized, but both beat a piece of string.

Fingers are not fixed objects. The same hand can read a half size differently across a single day, and that gap is where most sizing mistakes live.
Fingers are at their smallest first thing in the morning and gradually widen as the day goes on. Late afternoon or evening, at normal room temperature, gives you a reading closer to how the ring will feel most of the time you are wearing it.
Cold constricts. A measurement taken after coming in from winter weather can read a half size or more below the truth, which is exactly how someone ends up with a band that will not go over the knuckle in July.
Exercise, heat, a salty meal, alcohol, air travel, and certain medications all push fluid into the hands. Any of those in the hours beforehand will inflate the reading. Wait until things settle.
Take three or four readings across different days and different times. If they cluster tightly, you have your size. If they scatter across a full size, that finger fluctuates and the ring should be chosen with that range in mind rather than one lucky reading.
It is common for the same finger to run close to a half size larger in summer than in winter. A ring that is slightly loose in January and snug in August is usually behaving exactly as it should.
Pregnancy, meaningful weight change, thyroid conditions, and arthritis all move ring size, sometimes permanently. If any of those are in play right now, it is worth planning for a resize later rather than chasing a perfect number today.
The detail most people miss
Your finger has one size. A ring in that size does not always fit the same way, because the amount of metal touching your skin and the shape of the inside surface both affect how it feels going on and how it sits once it is there.
A wide band covers more of the finger, so it has more contact and less room to compress soft tissue. A 8 mm band in your measured size will usually feel tighter than a 2 mm band in the same size. A comfort-fit band works the opposite way. The inside is domed rather than flat, so less of the edge catches on the knuckle and the ring slides on more easily, which makes it wear slightly looser.

These are starting points, not rules, and they are not cumulative in a way you should stack blindly. A wide comfort-fit band involves two adjustments pulling against each other, and the result depends on the specific ring. Manufacturers also differ in how they cut a comfort-fit interior.
The only way to settle it is to try on a sizer in the actual width and profile you are buying. Any jeweler selling wide or comfort-fit bands should have width-specific sizers on hand. Ask for them.
Hard-to-fit fingers
Plenty of people have a knuckle noticeably wider than the base of the same finger. Arthritis, past injuries, and simple bone structure all cause it. The problem is straightforward: a ring sized to the base will not go on, and a ring sized to clear the knuckle will spin once it settles.
The base rule is that the ring has to pass the knuckle. Everything else is solvable afterward. So you size to clear the joint, then have the jeweler close the gap at the bottom.
Two small metal beads soldered inside the bottom of the shank. They lift the ring slightly off the base of the finger and stop it rotating, while the top of the opening stays wide enough to clear the knuckle. Simple, discreet, and reversible.
A hinged or sprung piece fitted inside the shank that flexes as the ring passes the knuckle, then sits closer against the finger. Better than beads for a large size gap, and more moving parts to maintain.
The bottom of the ring opens on a hinge and latches closed. Built for significant knuckle enlargement and reduced hand dexterity. It is the most involved of the three and the most effective when the gap is severe.

Get it right the first time
For a plain gold or platinum band, sizing is routine. A skilled bench can usually move a simple shank a size or two in either direction without anyone being able to tell. That flexibility disappears fast with certain metals and settings, and those are the rings where a careful measurement pays for itself.
Tungsten carbide, titanium, ceramic, cobalt, and most stainless steel. These either cannot be cut and soldered or lose their properties in the attempt. If the size is wrong, the ring gets replaced rather than altered, which is why many retailers selling them offer a lifetime exchange instead of sizing.
Stones run the entire circumference, so there is no plain metal to cut into. Changing the size means rebuilding the band and often recutting or replacing stones. A half eternity or three-quarter band leaves plain metal at the bottom and gives you room to work with later.
Small stones set down the sides limit how much can be removed or added, and the metal has to be worked around live stones. Movement of about a half size is often possible. Beyond that, the setting starts to distort.
A tension setting relies on the shank holding a specific spring load, so altering it changes what holds the stone. Wood, meteorite, and carbon fiber inlays crack under sizing. Hand engraving that wraps the band gets interrupted at the join. All three call for an exact size up front.
Buying in secret
You do not need a perfect number to propose. You need one close enough that the ring goes on, and a plan for the resize afterward. Choosing a setting that can be sized easily is worth more than any clever measuring trick.
The most reliable option, with the same condition as before: it has to come from the left ring finger. A ring from a middle finger or the other hand will send you off by a size or more. Take it to a jeweler, or slide it onto a mandrel yourself. Tracing the inside on paper is far less exact than either, so use it only if the ring has to go back within minutes.
A sister, a close friend, or her mother can raise the topic without it landing as a hint, or can go shopping and get her sized in a store with no explanation needed. This works better than most people expect, and it produces an actual measured number rather than an estimate.
The most commonly ordered women's engagement ring sizes in the United States sit around 6 to 6.5, and men's bands around 10 to 10.5.
